Hell's Gate & Lake Naivasha

Naivasha, Rift Valley
2 Days
Year Round
2 – 12 guests

Kenya's only national park where you can cycle among wildlife. Hell's Gate's gorge was the inspiration for Pride Rock in The Lion King. Hippos and fish eagles on the lake, geothermal steam venting from the gorge floor.

Hell's Gate is one of very few parks in Africa where you can walk or cycle freely among the wildlife. There are no lions or elephants — the geography is wrong for them — but buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and warthog graze around the path. The gorge is active, with geothermal steam venting from fissures in the floor. The walls of Fischer's Tower rise sixty metres from the gorge floor.

Lake Naivasha is one of Kenya's two freshwater Rift Valley lakes. Hippos live in the papyrus beds, and the lake holds one of Kenya's densest fish eagle populations. A boat trip at dawn or dusk is the most direct way to see both.

Highlights

Cycling Safari

Rent a bicycle at the park gate and cycle 8 kilometres through the gorge among giraffe, zebra, and buffalo.

Naivasha Boat Trip

Motorised boat on the lake at dawn. Hippo pods visible in the papyrus, fish eagle calls from the fever trees.

Fischer's Tower

A 60-metre volcanic plug rising from the gorge floor. Rock climbing permitted with a local guide.

Geothermal Vents

Steam vents on the gorge floor mark active geothermal activity. The heat is palpable at ground level.
