The greatest wildlife spectacle on earth, witnessed from a private tented camp on the Mara's outer conservancies. Charter flight from Wilson Airport included.
There is no polite way to describe what the wildebeest crossing looks like up close. Roughly 1.5 million animals — wildebeest, zebra, gazelle — move in a mass that has no regard for riverbanks, crocodiles, or the concept of an orderly queue. From the outer conservancies north of the main reserve, you watch this from a camp where the nearest fence is forty kilometres away and the only sound after dark is what was here long before anyone thought to build a camp.
The flight from Wilson Airport takes forty minutes in a Cessna Grand Caravan. You land on a dirt strip, and a Land Cruiser meets you. The driver knows where the crossings are likely to happen because he has been watching the herds for three weeks. He will be right.
