Ninety minutes over the Mara at first light, in a balloon carrying eight passengers and silence. The wildebeest herds are visible from four hundred metres. Nothing below you knows you are there.
The balloon launches from the Mara at 06:00, before the sun is fully up. For ninety minutes you drift at altitudes between thirty and four hundred metres, following the wind rather than directing it. The pilot communicates with the chase vehicle on the ground, but the balloon itself is subject to what the air does.
Below: wildebeest in the hundreds of thousands during migration season, lion prides visible on their kills, hippos moving between pools. The Mara River bends through it all. At the end of the flight, a full bush breakfast is laid out wherever the balloon lands — a white-tablecloth breakfast in the middle of the Mara, served by a crew who drove through the dark to meet you there.
