North of the equator, the wildlife changes. Reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx are found nowhere south of here. The Ewaso Ng'iro River runs through it all.
Samburu sits in Kenya's Northern Frontier — drier, more ancient-feeling, and home to the "Samburu Special Five": species found only in this arid zone north of the equator. The reserve is split by the Ewaso Ng'iro River, which draws every animal that lives here twice a day. You position your vehicle on the bank and wait.
The Samburu people have herded cattle on this land for centuries. The relationship between the reserve and the surrounding community is one of the more thoughtfully managed in Kenya, and the cultural experience is genuine — not performed.
